Yorkshire Building Society

Tinn Criddle & Co became agents of the Yorkshire Building Society in 2003 when the Yorkshire merged with the Gainsborough Building Society. However, archive material in the office shows the firm’s connections, through its successive proprietors down the years, with financial and banking services for some two hundred years.

Alford had its own Building Society managed by the firm which eventually was handed over to the Halifax Building Society (for whom the firm operated an agency). This was only given up in recent times when, in common with many of the largest Building Societies, the Halifax converted to a Bank.

From being agents for the largest Building Society in the World, the firm took on an agency for one of the smallest, the local town Society, Gainsborough, although the association was brief when shortly afterwards it was merged into the Yorkshire Building Society.

Yorkshire Building Society Branch

Yorkshire Building Society is one of the largest building societies in the UK.  It has some 1.9 million members and assets of £17.6 billion.

The Yorkshire is a mutual organisation. This means it is owned by, and run for, the benefit of its members and not outside shareholders

The Yorkshire was the first Building Society to commit itself to remaining a mutual at a time when some of its rivals decided to become Banks. In this and many other ways, they led the way in demonstrating that membership of a mutual Building Society brings a whole range of important benefits to investors and borrowers alike.

The Yorkshire has a nationwide network of 131 branches backed up by a network of agencies.

Because of the strict regulation connected with provision of financial services, Tinn Criddle & Co does not provide investment or financial advice of any kind. However, the Yorkshire offer a wide variety of savings accounts, including instant access and longer term savings and, as local agents, our Alford and Sutton offices provide personal and over-the-counter online services to Yorkshire Building Society investors.

There is a wide range of saving accounts which can be opened and managed from the branches and agencies. Contact the Alford & Sutton-on-Sea offices for information on these accounts or visit the Yorkshire Building Society website from the links below for further information:

Tax-free saving accounts

Everyone who pays tax should ideally have an ISA if they are 16 (18 for stocks and shares) or over and ordinarily resident in the UK. Even if you can only save from as little as £10, you should seriously consider putting your money into an ISA.

Before you open an account, you should think carefully about which type of ISA will suit you best. You can invest in cash or Stocks and Shares, either together or, in the case of a Mini-ISA, with up to two different product providers. You will benefit from tax-free interest if you choose a cash ISA but, while they are still tax-efficient, not all Stocks and Shares ISAs are tax-free.

What is an ISA? gives you a brief explanation of ISAs and the savings limit for each type.

The Yorkshire Building Society offer a choice between two types of Child Trust Fund account - stakeholder (in conjunction with engage Mutual Assurance) and non-stakeholder - which are available to children born on or after 1 September 2002. In addition, you can save regularly with our One Day account or invest a lump sum with their Treasure Bond.

Saving for the Future

You probably have several different reasons for wanting to save and invest. Most people have both short-term savings goals, perhaps saving up for a holiday or Christmas, and longer term plans, for example saving towards a new car, a deposit on a house or to help the kids when they are in further education.
